Hi there! My name is Melissa and I live in the Netherlands. I’m 21 years old and I’m studying art history in Amsterdam. I especially like the Italian Baroque and the Dutch Golden Age and I’m also following courses about museology and Italian language. I’m in my third and last year now and I’m also following an honors program. And I love traveling! Of course, my study requires some traveling to see famous art works, but I also save up my own money to see as much of the world as possible. I mostly travel within Europe, although I’ve traveled to North America twice and once to North Africa. I’m currently saving money for a big journey through South America after my art history bachelor.

Some other personal facts: my favorite color is gold, I love cats and sunsets make me really happy. I like Harry Potter, The Hunger games and Game of Thrones. I like different kinds of music, but at the moment I’m mainly listening to Taylor Swift, Marina and the Diamonds and Fall Out Boy. My birthday is the 4th of January and I like drawing, ballroom dancing and photography.

  1. Hi Melissa! Thanks for stopping by my blog. Always nice to meet a fellow traveler. I see you have not visited Japan yet. With the current exchange rate, this is a great time to go! Please come again, Jessy

    1. Thank you for the tip! The flights too Japan from the Netherlands are still pretty expensive though and I currently don’t have enough time and money to visit. But it’s certainly on my bucketlist, I’d love to go when the cherry blossoms are blooming!

      1. There really is so much to do – I went three years ago, and really enjoyed just wandering around as it’s so picturesque. I found the Anne Frank House really interesting, as I had read her book when I was younger. Thank you so much – this time I’ll be with my family, but if there are any hidden gems you’d recommend then I’d love to hear them! (muesums, parks, murals etc.!)

      2. One hidden gem in Amsterdam most people don’t know about is the Wijdesteeg. It’s a small alley near the Dam Square and there’s lots of fun and colorful street art. You can also go see the smallest house in Amsterdam on the Oude Hoogstraat 22. Amsterdam also has a cat café called Kopjes, so if you like cats that should be fun too (although this one is a little far from the city centre). And of course I would recommend visiting the Dam palace, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh museum and to either take a canal cruise or walk along the canals, but those aren’t exactly hidden gems, more like the huge diamonds of the city :).

      3. Thank you so much for your recommendations – I’ll be sure to check out the street art! You’ve suggested lots of things I didn’t manage to do last time I visited – really looking forward to exploring Amsterdam a bit more 🙂

      1. That is a really hard question, because I like so many painters and so many museums! If I had to choose 3 of each, I would say Vincent van Gogh, Rembrandt and Caravaggio and for the museums I would say the Galleria Borghese in Rome and the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. Thank you for asking :)!

      2. It’s really interesting to talk with you about your opinions 🙂 you are an expert in Arts… Rembrandt is great, with Van Gogh I have some difficulties 😉 His style of painting is a bit too abstract for me. Unfortunately I missed the galleria Borghese during my stay in Rome, but the Rijksmuseum I visited. it took a long time in there and it’s imposing…

      3. I especially love it because I know so much about the works in the Rijksmuseum from my art history study! You should definitely still visit the Galleria Borghese one day, it’s amazing (reserve in avance though). And I just love that you can see the paintings on the canvas in Van Goghs work and I love the colors he uses. But I mean everyone has different tastes :).
